The Adoption of Big Data in Selected Information Institutions in Bangladesh: a study

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to identify the big data adoption in information institutions as well as to justify the understanding and expertise level of information professionals. The study tried to identify the adoption of big data in the information institutions of Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was adapted cautiously for conducting the study. The Questionnaire was sent to more than 50 professionals of information institutions via email and FB messenger. The respondents are the professionals and faculty members who had the minimum qualification of bachelor/master /postgraduate degree in information science and library management. Among them, 25 respondents from 20 information institutions replied. Result: The study found that most of the information institutions yet to adopt big data properly in Bangladesh. Twenty percent of institutions adopted big data whereas eighty percent did not adopt it even some of the institutions are not aware of big data. The study found that sixty percent of professionals are not aware of the monthly amount of data used in their institutions. 2 The results found that information professionals are, in general, positive in big data adoption. The study also assessed the understanding level of them. Conclusion: The effort has been made to explore the current awareness activities of big data and its adoption in the information institutions of Bangladesh for the first time that will trigger further study on big data.
Analytical justification of vanishing point problem in the case of stairways recognition

Stair region detection and recognition from a stair candidate image is a challenging work in the computer vision research area. In the last few decades, researchers use many recognition systems to recognize and verify the stair region from other analogous objects. However, all the verification systems such as vanish ing point (VP) do not achieve the desired result for various reasons. In this regard, a method is proposed in this paper to investigate the vanishing point’s problem arising in the case of stair region verification based on the three basic criteria, i.e. focal angle of the camera, height of the camera from the ground, and distance of the camera from the stair image. For that, primarily, the stair region is extracted by uti lizing the geometrical features of a stair. The detected stair candidate region is verified through the y coordinate value of the vertical VP, i.e.y < 0. However, the y coordinate value of VP does not verify the stair region from all the scenarios. This paper investigates and justifies this problem utilizing the exper imental analysis and introduces a mathematical model to estimate the location of the VP of the stair region. Finally, support vector machine (SVM) classifier is utilized instead of VP to recognize the stair can didate region and the performance of SVM is compared with respect to the VP. For that, rotational invari ant uniform local binary pattern (LBP) is used for feature extraction. Stair images captured under different orientation and illumination conditions have been used to test the proposed method to evaluate the resultant accuracy.
Analyzing Wavelet and Bidimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition of MRI Segmentation using Fuzzy C-Means Clustering

Image segmentation is a vital step in medical image processing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used for brain tissues extraction in white and gray matter. These tissues extraction help in image segmentation applications such as radiotherapy planning, clinical diagnosis, treatment planning. This paper presents utilization of fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering by using wavelet and bidimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) to improve the quality of noisy MR images. The signal to noise ratio (SNR) value is calculated from FCM clustering data to examine the best segmentation technique. The experiment with synthetic Brain Web images has demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of the appropriate approach in segmenting medical MRI.
Anti-Corruption Disclosure, Corporate Social Expenditure and Political Corporate Social Responsibility: Empirical Evidence from Bangladesh

Corruption is a major concern globally, particularly in developing countries, such as Bangladesh, where it is the main obstacle to economic development. Corruption is also mentioned asthe major impediment to accomplishing sustainable development. There is a dearth of studies on anti-corruption disclosure (ACD), political corporate social responsibility (PCSR), and cash holding in Bangladesh magnitude of this research. This study investigates different drivers and motivations of ACD practice of a less control of corruption country’s firm-level observations. This study incorporates an institutional and legitimacy theoretical lens to explain anti-corruption disclosure practice. In order to draw the best picture of corruption disclosure, the study uses all financial sector companies listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. Therefore, the total firm-year observations are 245 from 2012–2016.The authors developed a diverse set of 97 keywords as content for ACD. The regression results show that CSR expenditures, political corporate social responsibility (PCSR), financial constraint, internationalization of reporting, and media visibility positively and significantly affect firm-level ACD. Furthermore, cash holdings show negative and significant relationships. The study provides new evidence on CSR expenditure, PCSR, cash holdings, and media visibility from a developing country’s perspective. Therefore, the results suggest that policymakers and regulatory authorities can deal with ACD as a legitimization tool for society and stakeholders.
Antidiarrheal, cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities of methanolic extract of Hedychium coccineum leaves

ABSTRACT: The study reports the in vivo antidiarrheal and in vitro cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities of methanolic extract of Hedychium coccineum leaves (MEHCL). The antidiarrheal activity was evaluated by castor oil-induced diarrhea, whereas the intestinal motility by charcoal marker. In addition, brine shrimp lethality bioassay and human blood clot lysis were used to evaluate the cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities, respectively. In antidiarrheal study, castor oil-induced diarrhea and gastrointestinal motility exhibited a significant dose dependent reduction in diarrhea and defecation and an extremely significant (P < 0.0001) inhibition in intestinal motility and peristalsis index by 200 and 400 mg/kg of MEHCL. The brine shrimp lethality bioassay revealed a considerable cytotoxic effect of MEHCL (LC50= 81.59 μg/mL; R² = 0.927) while in thrombolytic a significant percentage of clot lysis (17.36%, P < 0.01) demonstrated. The findings suggest that H. coccineum leaves could be potential sources for biological activity.
The Approach of SharÊÑah Audit in the Qur’an: An Analytical Study of Modern Scholars

The Qur’an came down in economic driven policy; because the Qur’an connects the belief in Allah firmly with socio economic justice. In Islamic economic system, SharÊÑah audit is an important tool which directs the systematic process of collecting and evaluating evidence to form an opinion about an entity’s status. The rapidly growing Islamic banking and finance industry is ultimately an endeavor based on an adherence to SharÊÑah principles and guidelines. At the same time, SharÊÑah governance framework is the SharÊÑah audit and compliance process which serves a vital role in providing public assurance about the governance of SharÊÑah products and services. In this regard, it is essential to have a comprehensive SharÊÑah control system to ensure that all products and services in accordance with the SharÊÑah. The main objective of this paper is to show the evidence of SharÊÑah audit in the Qur’an. This study gives an introduction to SharÊÑah audit from the Qur’anic perspective and also identifies the basic features and objectives of SharÊÑah audit. The study also discusses the views and opinions of SharÊÑah audit from the modern scholar’s perspective to get their ideas on SharÊÑah audit.
Assessing user satisfaction of koha in the private university libraries of Bangladesh

This study assessed the user satisfaction of library automation software (Koha) in private university libraries of Bangladesh. The survey conducted among three hundred seventy-two library users from thirteen private university libraries by a structured questionnaire which was adapted cautiously as per local arrangements after conducting a pilot survey. User category computed the users' responses for satisfaction through independent samples t-test. The Bartlett’s test of sphericity and Cronbach's alpha measured the reliability of each multiple-items scale. Besides, item loading, commonalities, and KMO measured the validity. The overall satisfaction (3.64) ensured favorable appreciation by the users, and their level of satisfaction was reasonably very well. The students’ satisfaction level (3.58) was significantly less (p < .006) than the teachers (3.83) in the private university libraries of Bangladesh. An attempt has been taken for the first time to assess the user satisfaction of library automation software (Koha) in the private university libraries of Bangladesh that will prompt further research on different aspects of Koha.
Behavioral Aspects of Individual Investors for Investment in Bangladesh Stock Market

The main objective of this study was to develop a framework about behavioral aspects of individual investors for investment in the stock market of Bangladesh. In the field of general information, we found that peoples had significant years of experience. Majority of the population came in the market on their self interest. People invested in the market to increase their capital. People adopted mixed strategy in financing. Most of the investors were small size in capital. Majority of the respondents were willing to buy in the bearish market. Majority of the investors were continuous in trading and they did not like to stay away from investment. They had collected information from multiple sources. In the field of firm’s image, we found that business performance, reputation of the firm, firm’s status, feelings for a firm’s product and services, firm’s involvement in solving community problem influence investor’s decision. Investors were also influenced by firm’s ethical operations. Investor’s decision was significantly influenced by the firm’s accounting information like EPS, financial statement, DPS, expected dividend, past performance etc. A very good percentage of investors were regularly reading the articles published in the daily newspaper, collected information from internet, TV talk show. Money market conditions also influenced investor’s decision. Individual investor’s decision was strongly affected by advice of brokers, friends and family. Affordable price, positive movement, ease of obtaining borrowed fund, past performance could also influence investment decision.
Biological investigations of the methanol extract of Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. (Vitaceae): In vivo and in vitro approach

Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Family: Vitaceae) is popular for its medicinal value in Bangladeshi tribal communities. This study aims to investigate several pharmacological values of methanol extract of T. leucostaphylum (METL). In vivo analgesic and anti-inflammatory researches have been implemented by using acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin-induced paw licking test protocols in mice. Furthermore, in vitro thrombolytic and anthelmintic studies have been performed by following the blood clot lysis method and nematode mortality measurement method. In the in vivo study, METL did not minimize the acetic acid-induced writhes prominently but significantly attenuate both the peripheral and inflammatory pain in mice in a dose-dependent manner. In early and late phase, METL 400 (mg/kg, b.w; p.o) showed 39.63 % and 48.73 % paw licking inhibition. Again, METL (100 μL) reflected 56.62 % clot lysis in thrombolytic research. Besides, METL causes the death of nematodes in a dose-dependent manner. The bioassay of the methanol extract of T. leucostaphylum justified the analgesic, anti-inflammatory, thrombolytic and anthelmintic activities of the crude extract and finally suggests the test extract as a wellspring of anti-inflammatory, thrombolytic and anthelmintic agents as a crude drug source.
Blue Economy of Bangladesh: Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Development

The blue economy refers to the economic activity based on maritime resources. The paper aims to explore the current scenario of sea resources of Bangladesh. Using secondary data, the study reveals that Bangladesh can accelerate its economic growth through the sustainable use of the sea resources. Moreover, Bangladesh has 710 km long coastline with 200 Nautical Miles of an exclusive economic zone inside the Bay of Bengal. Marine fisheries contribute 19.4% of the total fish production of the country. Besides, the western coastline of Cox’s Bazaar is the longest sea beach in the planet that is visited by on an average, 81% of the international tourists arrive in Bangladesh. However, due to lack of institutional capacity and given the socio-cultural context, the sustainability of the sea resources is now facing critical threats. Apart from studying the present status of sea resources, the paper proposed some way forwards based on existing opportunities and challenges for promoting sustainable development in Bangladesh

Causal Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment And Capital Flight: A Case Study of Bangladesh

The fundamental aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Capital Flight (KF) of Bangladesh. To obtain the objective, this paper has conducted statistical analyses and examined time series data over a period of Forty one years from 1973 to 2014. Unit root test and Granger causality test were exercised to measure the relationship between independent variable (FDI) and dependent variable (KF). The results found in this paper signify a positive correlation between FDI and Capital Flight and may be a concern and significant for the government of Bangladesh. The government might focus on required reforms and policy implications to make foreign investment more beneficial.
The Causes and Consequences of Rural Urban Migration in Bangladesh : A Review of the Relevant Literature

This study aims at reviewing the existing theories and studies of rural urban migration which explore the causes and consequences of rural urban migration of a developing country like Bangladesh. According to most of the relevant studies of rural urban migration poverty, joblessness, homelessness, landlessness, economic degradation, mal adjustment of the community, river erosion and various natural calamities are the major push factors in migration process. Although pull factors are not so dominant, easy access of informal sector, higher income earning possibility, better service facilities, and bright city lights attracted people to make a settlement in the urban areas. Depending on reviewed document, the significant consequences of migration are crate employment and cash earning, enjoying some civic amenities, overcrowding, difficulties of waste disposal, shortage of housing, inadequate educational facilities, poor water and power supply, traffic congestion and environmental degradation.
Causes and Consequences of Rural- Urban Migration in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study in Chittagong City

Migration is a natural process where normally surplus manpower released from the rural sector is needed for urban industrial growth. This study aims at throwing light on central characteristics of migrants, determining factors and consequences of rural-urban migration in the context of Chittagong city, Bangladesh based on a survey of 100 randomly selected migrants and their families. From the dataset, it is found that poverty, job search, landlessness, homelessness, various natural disaster are the main push factors for rural out migration, while easy access to informal sectors and slum area, higher income probability, better service facilities are the main pull factors behind migration. The ordinary least square technique is applied on three regression models which indicate the determinants of income of migrants before and after their migration, change of income after migration. Reducing disparities between rural and urban areas should receive in urgent attention to stabilize the rural out migration.
Challenges and Remedies for Adoption of Open Source Integrated Library System in the University Libraries of Bangladesh

This paper aims to identify the significant challenges and remedies for the adoption of Open Source Integrated Library System (OSILS) in the university libraries of Bangladesh. A survey was conducted among 184 library professionals from seven public and fourteen private university libraries using a structured questionnaire. The challenges for adoption of OSILS were computed through multiple regressions analysis. The regression models revealed that lack of consortium of OSILS, the unwillingness of library professionals to take the initiative, inadequate funding, lack of IT infrastructure, and lack of training & retraining of library professionals were the significant cause of lower adoption of OSILS in the university libraries of Bangladesh. Among the fourteen challenges for adoption of OSILS in the university libraries of Bangladesh, “lower the technical knowledge of library professionals on OSILS” occupied the highest mean, whereas “higher the availability of commercial software” formed the lowest mean. Among the twenty remedies for the adoption of OSILS in the university libraries of Bangladesh, “libraries should employ skilled manpower” occupied the highest mean whereas “technical support from vendors for adoption and maintenance of OSILS” formed the lowest mean. This study suggested some recommendations based on the findings. The effort has been made to assess the significant challenges and remedies for the adoption of OSILS in the University Libraries of Bangladesh for the first time that will trigger further study on OSILS.
Chemical Profiling, Pharmacological Insights and In Silico Studies of Methanol Seed Extract of Sterculia foetida

Sterculia foetida, also known as jangli badam in Bangladesh, is a traditionally used plant that has pharmacological activities. A qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed to assess the metabolites in a methanolic extract of S. foetida seeds (MESF), and the cytotoxic, thrombolytic, anti-arthritics, analgesic, and antipyretic activities were examined using in vitro, in vivo, and in silico experiments. Quantitative studies were performed through gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. The brine shrimp lethality bioassays and clot lysis were performed to investigate the cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities, respectively. The anti-arthritics activity was assessed using the albumin denaturation assay. Analgesic activity was determined using the acetic acidinduced writhing test and the formalin-induced paw-licking test. A molecular docking study was performed, and an online tool was used to perform ADME/T (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion/toxicity) and PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances). GC-MS analysis identified 29 compounds in MESF, consisting primarily of phenols, terpenoids, esters, and other organic compounds. MESF showed moderate cytotoxic activity against brine shrimp and significant thrombolytic and anti-arthritics activities compared with the relative standards. The extract also showed a dose-dependent and significant analgesic and antipyretic activities. Docking studies showed that 1-azuleneethanol, acetate returned the best scores for the tested enzymes. These findings suggested that MESF represents a potent source of thrombolytic, anti-arthritic, analgesic, antipyretic agents with moderate cytotoxic effects.
Chemical, biological and protein-receptor binding profiling of Bauhinia scandens L. stems provide new insights into the management of pain, inflammation, pyrexia and thrombosis

Bauhinia scandens L. (Family, Fabaceae) is a medicinal plant used for conventional and societal medication in Ayurveda. The present study has been conducted to screen the chemical, pharmacological and biochemical potentiality of the methanol extracts of B. scandens stems (MEBS) along with its related fractions including carbon tetrachloride (CTBS), di-chloromethane (DMBS) and n-butanol (BTBS). UPLC-QTOF–MS has been implemented to analyze the chemical compounds of the methanol extracts of Bauhinia scandens stems. Additionally, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects were performed by following the acetic acid-induced writhing test and formalin-mediated paw licking test in the mice model. The antipyretic investigation was performed by Brewer Yeast induced pyrexia method. The clot lysis method was implemented to screen the thrombolytic activity in human serum. Besides, the in silico study was performed for the five selected chemical compounds of Bauhinia scandens, found by UPLC-QTOF–MS By using Discover Studio 2020, UCSF Chimera, PyRx autodock vina and online tools. The MEBS and its fractions exhibited remarkable inhibition in dose dependant manner in the antinociceptive and antiinflammatory investigations. The antipyretic results of MEBS and DMBS were close to the standard drug indomethacin. Investigation of the thrombolytic effect of MEBS, CTBS, DMBS, and BTBS revealed notable clot-lytic potentials. Besides, the phenolic compounds of the plant extracts revealed strong binding affinity to the COX-1, COX-2, mPGES-1 and plasminogen activator enzymes. To recapitulate, based on the research work, Bauhinia scandens L. stem and its phytochemicals can be considered as prospective wellsprings for novel drug development and discovery by future researchers.
Circular economy model for developing countries: evidence from Bangladesh

From environmental and sustainable development perspective, circular economy model is rarely applied in developing countries compared to developed nations. The aim of this paper is to review the overall scenario of the circular economy (CE) model in Bangladesh toward sustainable development. The study relies on the descriptive analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, collected mostly from secondary sources with some in-depth interviews of the experts in the relevant field. The overall environmental status of Bangladesh, prospects, prac- tices, and challenges of the circular economy model were thoroughly discussed in this paper. Though there are prospects to switching towards CE, the study reveals that the CE model's applicability is very limited in Bangladesh, being exercised mostly through recycling processes in some industries. Most importantly, we attempted to explore what is holding the CE practice in Bangladesh back, and iterated some policy, technical, and public participation barriers existing in Bangladesh. This paper will benefit the policymakers in developing countries in general and Bangladesh in particular to look more into the matter and hope to present ideas for future researchers to work on the idea of CE in the context of particular sectors and subsectors of Bangladesh.
Comparative Experimental Analysis with and without Proposed Algorithm for MPPT using a DC-DC Converter for PV Array

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) array is an enormous source of green energy generation. Low efficiency and high cost is the great challenge of the solar systems. Various power electronic converter and algorithms are design to mitigate this challenge, Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm is one of them. In this paper a proposed algorithm is implemented through DC-DC converter. This proposed algorithm allows the PV array to work at its highest efficiency. Results from experiments show that the proposed MPPT algorithm improves overall system efficiency which is 89.37% higher compared to non MPPT system. To maximize the efficiency of the PV panel from zero to the maximum output, the entire range of the duty cycle needs to be used for the implementation of the proposed MPPT algorithm. In addition to this, a microcontroller based control system has been used in this work.
Comparative Performance of BER in the Simulation of Digital Communication Systems using Raised Cosine Filter

The robustness of the digital communication system is illustrated by comparing the BER and SER with and without filter. This research entails the development of a digital communication model that transmits base band data over an additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN). The performance of this model is enhanced by employing raised cosine filter which reduce the BER and SER compared to model without filter. The results show that the performance of the system improves when filter is implemented. The performance of 16-QAM is found to be better than that of 32-QAM and 64-QAM, which means that there must be a tradeoff between BER and energy efficiency of Modulation schemes of QAM. In this paper inter symbol interference (ISI) is examined and It is seen that ISI place an important role in digital communication systems. This paper also observed that overall transmission errors are less while increasing the ratio of bit energy per symbol (Eb /N0 ). Matlab communication tool box has been used for simulation
