How Validity is Ensured in Our Language Test: a Case Study.
(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, 2008-12) Kabir, Mohammed Humayun
In this paper we will first attempt to familiarize the paradigm shift in language teaching in Bangladesh. Then, the umbrella term validity is discussed with references to the literature. Subsequently, three different data instruments have been analysed in order to investigate how far validity is maintained in testing Reading and Writing taking HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) English testing as sample. The study found that validity at HSC English Testing is not maintained as item setting, marking, etc. are problematic. Finally, this study recommends some pragmatic measures like ensuring question setter's qualifications and orientation, bringing some changes in the item setting, providing rater's training, etc. to achieve the desired goal

Managing Curricular Innovation and Teacher Training: Bangladesh Perspective
(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2015-12) Kabir, Mohammed Humayun
This study aims at finding out the necessity of teachers’ training to put into practice the CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) based English textbooks (English for Today series i.e. EFT) in Bangladesh at school and college levels where Grammar-Translation-Literature based curriculum had been followed for decades. Using a mixed methods approach, I conducted the study by engaging the teacher participants in the questionnaire response, interviewing them, observing their classes and consulting different official reports and research findings. The study revealed that majority of our English teachers are not trained up at all to use these CLT textbooks though they feel that training might definitely skill them well and make them efficient enough to handle the newly designed EFT textbooks more effectively. It further revealed that even trained up teachers cannot create a truly communicative environment in the classroom as the existing testing system encourages students to memorize answers to some probable questions rather than engage them in communicative activities. This paper ends with some recommendations to overcome this existing hopeless situation.

(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-06) Kabir, Mohammed Humayun
In this essay, firstly, I will discuss importance of rating scales, relationship between assessment criteria and operations and conditions and effectiveness of rating scales while assessing writing. Secondly, I will examine a selection of scales and subsequently there will be an estimation of those in meeting objectives of the tests and of the course. Finally, I will recommend a suitable rating scale to test English First paper and English Second Paper writing skill at HSC level in Bangladesh evaluating the existing one where I will mention steps to be taken to reduce inter and intra- rating fluctuation in scoring
