Item The Advent of Islam in Bengal; An Economic Perspective(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Islam, Md ThowhidulThis article aims at examining the causes to the advent of Islam in Bengal with a view to identify the economic perspectives in particular. Islam took about six hundred years for its advent into Bengal with political conquest by Bakhtiyar Khalji in the early 13th century, while it had come to Arabia at the beginning of the 7th century. But long before the conquest of Bengal by Bakhtiyar Khalji, the Arab traders had established commercial relation with the coastal lands of Bengal. Islam began to enter into Bengal with the hands of these early Arab Muslim traders. With the beginning of this early advent, Islam started to enter into Bengal through both the sea and land routes on different circumstances. Though there were many other reasons and grounds for the advent of Islam in Bengal, but the economic perspectives were the foremost and forerunner of the causes.Item CLT Classrooms: Teachers' Role & A Bangladesh Perspective(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Tarannum, SawsanThis paper is designed to look at the role of teacher talk and teacher-student interaction in the management of communicative English learning. In particular, the focus is given on the activities of the teachers in a communicative English language classroom. For the organization of the classroom, teacher talk is of crucial importance. The language which teachers use is important for the organization and management of a communicative English language classroom, because it is the medium through which teachers either succeed or fail to implement their teaching plans. In this paper I have tried to discuss the role of a teacher in a communicative way. Teachers have to play different roles in CLT classrooms; therefore I will focus on their functions in general and their problems in the context of Bangladesh in particular.Item Design, Implementation and Performance Analysis of a Low-cost Optical Tachometer(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Bakibillah, A. S. M.; Uddin, Muhammad Athar; Haque, Shah AhsanulElectrical and mechanical machineries are used in industrial and domestic applications. Measurement of speed of revolving machineries is necessary for their proper functioning and controlling. Tachometer is an instrument which is used to measure the speed of revolving shaft, gear and pulley. This paper describes the basic construction of a low cost optical tachometer and analyzes its performance. The basic tachometer circuit consists of two stages. In the first stage monostable wired around IC NE555 is used, and in the second stage a digital counter based 4-digit counter IC 74C926 is used for the construction of the tachometer. A 5V regulated power supply circuit and an infrared light source circuit are also used. The instrument can measure speed upto 9999 RPM. This speed measurement instrument performs well in terms of accuracy, and can be very useful due to its simplicity and low cost.Item Evaluation Developing Critical Thinking: A Case Study of Teaching a Hemingway Story(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 201-12) Sharif, Mohd. YasinEnglish Literature is generally taught at tertiary level in Bangladesh to develop the critical and analytical ability of students, so as to enable them to develop their own evaluation and assessment of texts studied in classrooms. Such assumption often proves in vain, because even tertiary level students depend more on their cognitive capacity rather than their creative ability. Thus the ability of a student to think critically seldom grows because critical thinking (ct) is a faculty which only increases with practice and concentration. This paper endeavors to explore critical thinking ability as an important aspect of pedagogy which further enables a learner to be self-confident and inspirational in using his/her acquired knowledge both in the academy as well as in real life situations. The main focus of the paper is the traditional or classical process of literature study in classroom situations we usually practice in this part of the world to develop the psychology, thought process, and maturity of a learner. Literature is thought to have the power to develop or to create curiosity in learners in finding out the critical situation of real world. Again literature is believed to be a collection of characters, reflection of real life, absurdity, and the hundreds and thousands of problems and solutions to be encountered by a learner everyday which develops the faculty in learners to adjust or overcome hurdles in real life. Thus the paper through the analysis of a popular American short story “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway tries to address the problems and solutions related to the teaching/development of critical thinking ability.Item Identity of an Islamic Ideological State: An Analytical Study(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Hoque, Muhammad RafiqulThe Islamic system of state established by the Prophet (SM), existed from 623CE in Medina. The state of Medina was neither monarchic nor republican, ruled on the policy of the majority. This state was based neither on tribalism nor on nationalism, rather on humanism and Islamic monotheism. It was really an Ideological state and the ideology was Islam. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to describe the main features of an Islamic Ideological state through its main principles and distinguishing points of three basic organs and to analyse the differences between an Islamic state and secular states.Item Illusion, Deception and Dehumanization: Neocolonial Reinforcementof Colonial Legacy and the Role of English(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Alam, Mohammed SarwarUnder the holy mask of civilizing the world, colonizers have done the unholy task of forming and deforming societies to serve their vested interests. Over centuries, they have skillfully dominated colonized societies through illusion, deception and dehumanization. In the face of national liberation movements, they had to retreat physically, but the inhuman legacy they left behind continues to benefit them in the absence of strong resistive decolonizing discourses. Predatory globalization, through destructive development culture is now the prevailing mode of recolonization which is turning our dreams for a just global society into an ever illusive one. In this context, echoing the views expressed in “On the Abolition of the English Department” (Ngugi: 1968), this paper argues that English Language and Literature departments have been largely responsible for not forming a strong decolonizing culture and discourse. Also, this paper arrives at an understanding that like Caliban in Shakespeare, English Language now, with growing awareness across the globe, could be used to expose, curse and resist deceptions of the recolonizing forces.Item In vitro Study on Interaction of Ketotifen Fumerate with Paracetamol(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Sayeed, Mohammed Aktar; Rana, SohelInteraction of ketotifen fumerate and paracetamol was studied in aqueous media. The ability of interaction of ketotifen with paracetamol is dependent on pH of the solution and it has been found that ketotifen forms 1:1 complexes at different pH. The stability constants have been calculated from the Ardon’s spectrophotomeric measurements of the reaction systems. When ketotifen was interacted with paracetamol and the absorbance was determined at 300 nm the stability constants were found of -7.32 and -7.84 at pH 1.6 and 7.4 respectively.Item The Influence of the Local Varieties on the Sound Patterns of English: A Case Study of Bangladeshi Tertiary Students(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Hoque, Muhammad AzizulThis paper is an outcome of the study that was directed to investigate the influence of the local varieties on the sound patterns of English of Bangladeshi tertiary students. The study deals with the existing pronunciation style and tries to identify the problems in the light of the rural background of the students. The study is qualitative by nature illuminating qualitative data, and the methods of data collection consist of record keeping of words through direct interview, reading passages and dialogues. The results of the study are the mispronunciation of English words because of the influence of local varieties, ignorance and lack of the Standard English pronunciation system, etc. On the basis of the findings, some pedagogical implications and recommendations have been made.Item Internet Peculiarity and Territorial Traditionalism Converge on Cyberspace: A Study of Techno-legal Synchronization in the USA(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Hoque, Kazi Arshadul; Rahman, Mohammad MahabuburLaw is enacted and imposed by sovereign state authority. As the states are territorial in nature, the enforcement of law depends to a large extend on the ability to exercise physical control over the territory. Cyberspace and internet have no territorial-based boundaries and are almost entirely independent of physical location. In spite of inevitability of a distinct set of laws and legal principles to be adopted for cyber offences the traditional territorial law can supply element for cyber legal issues. The hi-tech pioneer American courts whether federal or provincial are very much inclined to decide the internet- cases on the basis of territorial concept by applying the principles of traditional territorial notions. This article concentrates on the study of the American cases as a representative type of hi-tech nations for searching the influences of traditional territorial concept on the settlement of internet- cases and the way for overcoming the problems came out of cyber peculiarity. This article will show how law together with internet has created a new environment in legal arena; and how the USA as high-tech nation relying upon previous territorial experience is making new pathway for the jurists, courts and all others. This article is based on keen observation and intensive analysis of American practice.Item Misyar Marriage between Shari`ah texts, Realities and scholars Fatawa: An Analysis(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Osmani, Noor MohammadMarriage is a sacred bond in Islam that ties a man and a woman into a lifelong relationship of love, compassion, mutual understanding, respect and security. It is a firm pledge that one makes in the name of Allah for one-another. Misyar marriage, Convenience marriage or Travelers marriage is a new form of marriage practiced widely in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other gulf states. The Misyar bride sacrifices some of her marital rights, such as expenses, fixed duration, and an abode. The scholars in Islam have different opinions about this form of marriage. Some of them supported it vehemently, as it could reduce the number of ladies without husbands; while yet others strongly oppose it, as it sounds like part-time wives, which has no roots in Islamic heritage. The present study therefore aims to explore the real status of Misyar or convenience marriage in the texts from the Quran, Prophets Sunnah, the practices of his rightly guided Companions and the Fatawa of the traditional and modern scholars. It would analyze them in the light of the current realities and situations prevailing in many countries of the Muslim world. The study would adopt a critical yet objective approach in dealing with the issue. It is believed that the study would help the Muslim men and women to have clear insights on the issue based on the Shari`ah texts, scholars Fatawa and present day realities.Item Mobile Commerce and Mobile Payment: A Study on Islamic Perspective(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Islam, Md. Monirul; Masum, Abdul Kadar MuhammadElectronic commerce, very important part of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), is one of the most common business terms in use in 21st century. Developed countries are more popular because of their rapid growth of ICT, e-commerce and online transaction. But in developing or under develop countries the scenario is different. Technical laggings, dearth of infrastructure, infeasibility of the existing frameworks and people apathy are the main reasons behind this. There are several alternative ways of e-commerce and online transaction. Mobile payment, a way of online transaction, may be beneficial way of payment for developing countries because of its mobile network infrastructure. In this paper, a model of electronic payment system for M-Commerce has been proposed and analyzed the security for the system. This proposal may be suitable for developing countries where mobile phones are available but other e-payment tools like debit and credit cards are not much available. It also identifies what Islam has to say about our current use of M-Commerce and the way Islam can offer guidance for its use in the future. The paper also touches on the conditions and criteria that must be met in order to make an M-Commerce transaction acceptable under Islamic perspective.Item The Objectives and Intents of Islamic Shari'ah As a Paradigm of Development Strategies and Policies(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Elahi, Mohammad Monzur-EThe paper presents that the theory of objectives and intents of Islamic Shari'ah, which is termed as Maqasid al- Shari'ah al-Islamiyah, can provide a vision through which present and future changes and development of the Mankind can be proactively defined, negotiated, led and persuaded. It addresses the issue of the objectives of Islamic Shari'ah not only as a tool for the development within the traditional framework of our legal thought and practice, but within a more extended spectrum of thought that brings the concept of the objectives of Islamic Shari'ah to the overall development as well as the reconstruction of the Muslim thought, personality, culture and civilization. The theme showed in the paper is that the Knowledge of the Objectives of Islamic Shari'ah can play an important role as a universal paradigm in enhancing the abilities and qualities of the Ummah to reach a positive change and development from the present situation. But there is a need to review the Framework based on the Knowledge of the Objectives of Islamic Shari'ah in order to ensure its effectiveness in providing the necessary principles, methods and guidelines required in the processes of development strategy. Thus the paper suggests the ways of restoring back the sense of dynamism to the objective approach of Islamic Shari'ah in creating the methodological, social, educational, epistemological and cultural frameworks as a paradigm of development strategies, policies and processes for the betterment of the contemporary Muslim Ummah.Item Power System Switching Transient Detection using Wavelet Transformed Based Signal Decomposition(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Alam, M Shafiul; Chowdhury, Md Shamimul Haque; Uddin, Muhammad AtharSwitching transient phenomena in Electric Power System develop several disturbances, sometimes very hazardous for the electrical equipment life, for the environment and for the human life. Switching transient phenomena produce over voltage, over current and electrical fields, which haven't to neglect. Several types of wavelet network algorithms have been considered for detection of power system switching transients. But both time and frequency information are accessible by multiresolution analysis (MRA). This paper presents a wavelet transform based multiresolution analysis of power system signal to detect, localize and extract switching transients. Power system switching transients have been simulated using MATLAB-7.01. The key idea underlying the approach is to decompose a distorted signal into other signals which represents a smoothed version and detailed version of the original signal. The decomposition is performed using multiresolution analysis. The proposed method appears to be robust for detection and localization of power quality disturbances produced due to load switching and capacitor switching.Item Practices of Corporate Social Responsibility: A Study on some Islamic Organizations in Bangladesh(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Haque, Md Shariful; Ahmad, Md MokhterCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a commitment of the organizations to act ethically and contribute to economic development of the society while humanizing the quality of life of the workforce and the local community at large. This is a talented issue for the corporation the world over. CSR is required for the organizations to ensure its sustainability. Now-a-days the practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Critics argue that CSR deviates from the fundamental economic role of business; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial windowdressing; others yet argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations. Notwithstanding, CSR is a global concern and all organizations practice it to some extent. In this article the authors made an effort to justify CSR and the concomitant issues in the light of Shar?ah, and examine the welfare practices of some Islamic Organizations in Bangladesh to see whether those fall under the traditional concept of CSR. An investigation has been made into some Islamic organizations in Bangladesh using an unstructured questionnaire. It transpires from the study that almost all these investigated Islamic organizations practice social responsibilities in different forms like Qard-EHasanah, scholarships/stipends, plantation, health services, establishing schools etc.Item Reading Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange: Cultural Oddities and Their Social Impact(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Ahmed, Mohammad Kaosar; Rahman, Md. MizanurAnthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange (1962) portrays the disintegration of the traditional British culture and the rise of a new youth culture in revolt which produced violence and perversity. This youth culture started pervading the layers of the traditional British culture. The 1960s had found the British culture assuming a distorted shape both in values and norms - a culture completely opposite to its original tradition in terms of the socioeconomic changes that took place following the Second World War. The postwar generation had to peep into the collapsed world from a perspective quite different from the previous one because of the rising tension emerging out of a new threat from nuclear war hanging overhead. This paper seeks to explore the extent to which the newly emerged culture affected the young generation and brought about chaos and disorder in British society.Item Revisiting English Language Teaching (ELT) Curriculum Design: How Appropriate is Bangladesh Higher Secondary Level National ELT Curriculum as a Learner-Centred One?(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Ali, Md MaksudELT curriculum design has seen several transformations overtime, especially with the changing views on the educational ideologies and philosophies in the western world. As far as teaching English in an English as a Second/Foreign language (ESL/EFL) context is concerned, it is often suggested that the ESL or the EFL education should be acculturalized as to be responsive to a particular group of people, and that again refers to the need for a national curriculum for ELT in an EFL country. Thus, in designing an ELT curriculum in an ESOL context, the designers need to examine not only whether the curriculum is responsive to the needs of a group of learners but also if it is culturally appropriate in that context or not. Following a qualitative case study research method, this paper examines the extent to which the Higher Secondary ELT national curriculum in Bangladesh is responsive to the socio-cultural needs and the needs of the learners.Item The Right to Information Act in Bangladesh: An Analysis in the Light of Johannesburg Principles of Freedom of Information Legislation(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Murad, Mohammad Hasan; Hoque, Kazi ArshadulToday's knowledge based world is now resonating with the call for meaningful democracy backed by transparency and accountability in the state engine and peoples right of access to information has gained a great importance. In a modern democratic state, the right to information, more popularly described as the right to know, is an indispensable prerequisite. There is no denying the fact that the notion of freedom of thought, of conscience, of speech and rule of law become worthless if the people are deprived of access to information. There appears to have been a universal recognition of the demand and necessity for the establishment of peoples right of access to information. The experience in other countries suggests that this scenario can be changed by empowering people with right to information or freedom of information. The translation of right to information into law has to be done considering a number of principles which are required to be addressed in the law. The article presents an overview of the concept of right to information and attempts to discuss the principles underpinning right to information along with an analysis of to what extent those principles are reflected in the right to information law of Bangladesh.Item The Role of Context in Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Kabir, Md. HumayunIn this article, we have tried to develop a clear concept of approach i.e.-language theory and learning theory and also presented the idea of method i.e. - a way of teaching a language which is based on systematic principles and procedures. Subsequently, we have tried to clarify the notion of context. In the discussion, I have attempted to explain why the consideration of contextual factors is vitally important in applying an approach or method by a language teacher while she/he teaches. I have also examined and given references to the context of my teaching experience in Bangladesh which are relevant to the thesis of this article.Item Teaching - Learning Situation of Speaking in English at the University Level: A Case Study(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Hosain, Md IqbalThis paper intends to find out the problems that the students face in speaking in English at the different universities in Bangladesh. It investigates the merits and demerits of the existing teaching methodology of English at the university level. With a view to finding out the causes of the students lack of competence in speaking in English, some authentic data have been collected from the different universities of the country. And after a thorough analysis, a suggestion has been made for teachers to use some pragmatic ways of improving speaking skills in English. It further examines the different techniques of teaching speaking in English at the university level along with its curriculum and testing system, and offers some easy and modern methods of teaching English.Item The Tendency of Breaking Arranged Marriages in Indian Subcontinent and Ways of Peaceful Co-Existence in the light of Islam(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Rahman, Md MasudurBreaking arranged marriage has become of late a common phenomenon in the Muslim society of the Indian sub continent. For this, misunderstanding, clash and quarrels break out inside the family and society. Family loses money, peace and tranquility. This is disgusting burden for the society and obstacles to development also. This article discusses the reasons of breaking arranged marriages and has given a suggestion to reduce the tendency of misunderstanding of the conjugal life in the light of the religion of Islam.
