Item Design, Implementation and Performance Analysis of a Low-cost Optical Tachometer(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Bakibillah, A. S. M.; Uddin, Muhammad Athar; Haque, Shah AhsanulElectrical and mechanical machineries are used in industrial and domestic applications. Measurement of speed of revolving machineries is necessary for their proper functioning and controlling. Tachometer is an instrument which is used to measure the speed of revolving shaft, gear and pulley. This paper describes the basic construction of a low cost optical tachometer and analyzes its performance. The basic tachometer circuit consists of two stages. In the first stage monostable wired around IC NE555 is used, and in the second stage a digital counter based 4-digit counter IC 74C926 is used for the construction of the tachometer. A 5V regulated power supply circuit and an infrared light source circuit are also used. The instrument can measure speed upto 9999 RPM. This speed measurement instrument performs well in terms of accuracy, and can be very useful due to its simplicity and low cost.Item Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Units for Transmission Grid Observability(IEEE, 2016-10-28) Shafiullah, Md; Rana, Md Juel; Alam, Md Shafiul; Uddin, Muhammad AtharPhasor Measurement Unit (PMU) provides both magnitude and phase information of current and voltage signals with appropriate time stamp which is very useful in controlling power system networks in real time. Consequently, PMU is considered as one of the most significant measurement devices for complete observability of the future electricity grids. But placing PMU in every bus of the network is not economically viable. This paper aims to place PMUs in different buses of electric network to ensure full network observability employing five evolutionary, colony and swarm optimization algorithms namely backtracking search algorithm (BSA), differential evolution (DE), artificial bee colony (ABC), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and invasive weed optimization (IWO). The proposed algorithms have been tested on IEEE 14-bus, 30-bus, 39-bus and 57-bus test networks. The obtained results illustrate the compatibility of the proposed schemes in compared to each other as well as in compared to available techniques in literatures.Item Power System Switching Transient Detection using Wavelet Transformed Based Signal Decomposition(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Alam, M Shafiul; Chowdhury, Md Shamimul Haque; Uddin, Muhammad AtharSwitching transient phenomena in Electric Power System develop several disturbances, sometimes very hazardous for the electrical equipment life, for the environment and for the human life. Switching transient phenomena produce over voltage, over current and electrical fields, which haven't to neglect. Several types of wavelet network algorithms have been considered for detection of power system switching transients. But both time and frequency information are accessible by multiresolution analysis (MRA). This paper presents a wavelet transform based multiresolution analysis of power system signal to detect, localize and extract switching transients. Power system switching transients have been simulated using MATLAB-7.01. The key idea underlying the approach is to decompose a distorted signal into other signals which represents a smoothed version and detailed version of the original signal. The decomposition is performed using multiresolution analysis. The proposed method appears to be robust for detection and localization of power quality disturbances produced due to load switching and capacitor switching.Item Scientific Research; Instructions from the Holy Quran(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2012-12) Uddin, Muhammad AtharScience is the branch of knowledge that deals with the material world. In scientific research it is necessary to know "How does our knowledge of physical world expand?" and "What are the principles of scientific research?" In fact scientific research is a combination of experimental works and intellectual activity. The Almighty Allah has given specific fundamental properties to every materials of the universe. The Scientist can only discover very few of those properties and apply them in integrated form when and where necessary. Continuation of scientific research and advancement of the technology is possible only because of the unchangeable fundamental properties of all materials of the universe formulated by the Almighty Allah. As per Quranic instructions no scientific research is accepted without proven reason and the scientific theories contradictory to the Holy Quran must be rejectedItem Switching Signal Reduction of Load Aggregator with Optimal Dispatch of Electric Vehicle Performing V2G Regulation Service(IEEE, 2016-10-28) Alam, M. Shafiul; Shafiullah, Md; Rana, Md Juel; Javaid, M. S.; Irshad, Usama Bin; Uddin, Muhammad AtharEnvironmental concerns over the production of greenhouse gas have led to the development of environmental friendly transportation such as electric vehicle (EV). As the number of EVs is increasing day by day, it will have a great impact on grid operation and electricity market. Significant amount of EV charging during peak hour will cause branch congestions and low voltage. Moreover, high penetration of EVs plays an important role in altering electricity price. Thus, optimal scheduling of EVs charging is inevitable from the perspective of both system reliability and market. Load aggregators can combine the capacities of many EVs to participate in wholesale energy market. In this paper, optimal dispatch algorithm of EVs is developed and tested on a system consisting 1000 EVs. The advantage of the algorithm is that it requires less number of communication signals and less expensive infrastructure. EVs are turned on and turned off in binary fashion based on priority to follow the regulation signal.Item Toward Islamization of Science and Technology(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2012-12) Ferdous, Fouzia; Uddin, Muhammad AtharThe attitude and knowledge of Muslim Scientists can play an important role in the efforts for Islamization of Knowledge. Unfortunately, all sciences including Engineering and Technology of today which flourished at the hands of Muslim scholars in the medieval age are void completely from Islamic attitude and spirit. The Muslim Scientists of today are obligated to the Muslim Ummah to bring the spirit of sciences back in accordance with the spirit of Islam. Concrete proposals with specific plans should be further pursued, both academically and practically in the process of Islamization of Science and Technology.
