Item Nature of errors and mistakes in the English writings of graduating students in Bangladesh: A case study((CRP), International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh,, 2021-02-13) Hoque, Muhammad AzizulThere is no denying that writing is quite tiresome in both second language teaching and learning situations. And so, selecting an appropriate strategy to provide the learners with necessary feedback in their writings seems to be a complicated task in language pedagogy. The present researchers observe that despite the writing practice of English for about 12 years in Bangladesh, the tertiary students commit mistakes and errors. They, therefore, feel numerous studies should be conducted to find an effective means of feedback for mistakes and errors the students make. Thus, this paper identifies the nature of mistakes and errors in their writings and finds out remedial procedures by means of knowing the factors contributing to the recurrence of these errors and mistakes year after year. To obtain data, some writing samples of paragraphs in groups, business letters, and letters of application have been taken from some undergraduate students of a university, and an opinion survey of teachers with an open-ended questionnaire has also been conducted. The study concludes with some pedagogical recommendations based on relevant concerns.Item The Influence of the Local Varieties on the Sound Patterns of English: A Case Study of Bangladeshi Tertiary Students(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Hoque, Muhammad AzizulThis paper is an outcome of the study that was directed to investigate the influence of the local varieties on the sound patterns of English of Bangladeshi tertiary students. The study deals with the existing pronunciation style and tries to identify the problems in the light of the rural background of the students. The study is qualitative by nature illuminating qualitative data, and the methods of data collection consist of record keeping of words through direct interview, reading passages and dialogues. The results of the study are the mispronunciation of English words because of the influence of local varieties, ignorance and lack of the Standard English pronunciation system, etc. On the basis of the findings, some pedagogical implications and recommendations have been made.Item Chittagonian Variety: Dialect, Language, or Semi-Language?(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2015-12) Hoque, Muhammad AzizulThe main concern of this paper is to explore the status of Chittagonian variety- a language spoken by the people of Chittagong in Bangladesh-with a view to considering whether it is a dialect of Bangla or a language or a semi-language. Though it is closely related to Bangla, its distinctive features like a different sound system, mutual unintelligibility with Bangla, etc. give it a separate entity and encourage the researcher of this paper to rethink about the existing idea of its being a dialect of Bangla and to try to present some supportive arguments in favor of its separate entity as a language. In the article the researcher has provided an introduction to the Chittagonian variety; language and dialect; previous literature, and used methodology consisting of random sampling based on the collection of newspaper articles, books, and internet sources, and the like. And some findings from that research and recommendations have been discussed.
