The Authenticity Gap between what is taught in Bangladeshi EFL Courses and the Reality of ‘authentic’ English
(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2015-12) Tarannum, Sawsan
The issues intend to discuss in this paper is one that frustrates teachers and students alike. Bangladeshi Students diligently practice their English for varying degrees of time and make varying amounts of progress but seem to run into insurmountable difficulties when confronted with ‘native speaker’ (NS) English. These difficulties stem from the seeming lack of convergence between the language being used by NSs and the language our students are practicing. In short, there is something of a 'gap' between what is taught in English conversation classes in Bangladesh, and the reality of ‘authentic’ English. This paper, therefore, briefly focuses on what is meant by the term ‘authenticity gap’ and the ‘role of text books’ in relation to this ‘gap’. Problems associated with utilizing ‘authentic English’ in Bangladeshi classrooms will also be discussed in detail. Finally, there will be recommendations on how to bridge this gap.

(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-12) Tarannum, Sawsan
This paper is designed to look at the role of teacher talk and teacher-student interaction in the management of communicative English learning. In particular, the focus is given on the activities of the teachers in a communicative English language classroom. For the organization of the classroom, teacher talk is of crucial importance. The language which teachers use is important for the organization and management of a communicative English language classroom, because it is the medium through which teachers either succeed or fail to implement their teaching plans. In this paper I have tried to discuss the role of a teacher in a communicative way. Teachers have to play different roles in CLT classrooms; therefore I will focus on their functions in general and their problems in the context of Bangladesh in particular.

    Teaching Stress to ESL Students
(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2010-06) Hossain, Gazi Shahadat; Tarannum, Sawsan
In English conversation, people use their voice as a complex instrument. As they use sound systems of their languages, their pronunciation usually produces infinite variations of meaning. This variation made by stress on particular syllable or word creates confusion in the minds of the ESL (English as a Second Language) students in identifying the correct meaning of the word. So it is essential for ESL students to be familiar with English stress pattern. This essay will highlight the meaning and role of stress, the ways of raising awareness among the students and the techniques of teaching it in the classroom
