Item Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Practice of Cellular Phone Companies in Bangladesh(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2011-12) Hoque, Sayema; Chowdhury, TanzinaCellular phone companies have occupied a significant position in the economy of Bangladesh. It has become one of the most profitable sectors as well as a big contributor to the government exchequer of this country. A great deal of economic resources is being utilized in this particular industry. Being an integral part of the society the companies operating within this industry are supposed to contribute towards social welfare through performing corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this backdrop, this study attempts to provide an overview of the CSR practices of the cellular phone companies of Bangladesh with special reference to the nature and impact of those practices. Based on the information provided in the annual reports and websites of respective companies the study has reached a conclusion that all the cellular companies except Airtel are engaged in CSR practices of some sort or other such as education, empowerment & poverty alleviation, environment, healthcare and others. However, there is still room for expanding CSR related activities to gain the potential benefits.Item Relationship between market share and profitability: A study on Islamic banks of Bangladesh(CRP, Center for Research and Publication, 2020-12) Hoque, SayemaThis study is conducted to examine the effects of market share on profitability. A panel data covering 8 full-fledged Islamic banks of Bangladesh and the period 2011-2020 is used for the analysis. Based on Hausman test, random effects model is chosen to estimate the effects of market share. Market share is represented in terms of asset as well as deposit. To measure profitability, return on equity is used. Investment is used as control variable. Time dummies are also used to account for time effects. Findings suggest that one percentage point increase in market share in terms of asset leads to 3.73 percentage points increase in ROE. Besides, if market share in terms of deposit increases by one percentage point, ROE increases by 3.14 percentage points. Based on these findings, Islamic banks of Bangladesh should consider increase in market share as one of the effective ways to enhance profitability.Item Social Business: A Revolutionary Idea in the Field of Poverty Alleviation(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2011-12) Hoque, SayemaPoverty is one of the major problems around the world. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus has come up with a revolutionary idea to solve that problem by introducing the social business concept which emphasizes a combined and organized effort of poverty alleviation through self-sustaining business mechanism. This paper attempts to overview of the idea, discuss current practice of social business in Bangladesh; and compare social business model with other existing business models.
